The basic function of an interior designer is to manage the things in a given space. Thus the designer should have a clear idea about the space, and should have a clear mathematical knowledge. In many institutes, the academic authorities ask for mathematical background of the students who will take admission into this course.

As an interior designer, an individual may choose to specialize in a particular area of expertise such as residential, commercial and landscape design. Further specializations include institutional design and the focus on specific rooms like bathrooms, kitchens and bedrooms. After the completion of the course, the students may either join an interior designing organization or they may also set up their own business.

During the period of the course, students are taught as to how to make blueprints of the design for the presentation, how to manage different designing materials within a small space, how to budget the whole project as well as the use of small objects for the designing part. Interior Design is offered as a specialization in 4 year Bachelor of Fine-Arts (BFA) programs.

A 5 year professional program in Interior Design is also offered in the School of Interior Design in the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology (CEPT) in Ahmadabad. This profession can prove to be very lucrative and fulfilling, especially once the interior designer has made a name for himself in the industry. The interior designers can also do part times if they want to.
