Managing Trustee's Message

GURUGRAM PUBLIC SCHOOL
GURGOAN

November 2,2012

Dear Parent,

I have always regarded the school as a place where we constantly engage ourselves in helping our children to realize their dreams. We also seek total involvement of Parents in giving care and love to their children which form the core of building values of truthfulness and honesty. We desire our children should passionately engage themselves to pursue these goals.

A happy childhood , a virile boyhood is what we constantly seek from them. Full of energy always cheerful they should pursue achieving excellence in their pursuits. We have an excellent faculty of well qualified teachers under the able guidance of the Principal who is equally passionate in developing these core values in our children. My daughter in law is a great help in developing right systems and procedures at the school. Her efforts are responsible in providing a forum to children to articulate their feelings through School News letter and Magazine. The editorial staff under the able guidance of English faculty is doing a commendable job in promoting Creative Writing.

Let me now state some of the steps taken to promote excellence in education.
1. Display on the Website regarding average marks in each subject for each class. This should help your child to put in needed effort to remain in the comfort zone of striving to achieve better results.

2. We are now also displaying the grades obtained by each child in each subject for each class. These grades will be revised every fort night. All children should work hard to improve their grades

3. We will also be hosting the profile and photograph of the best student for the month in the Middle and Senior sections. These students will earn a cash prize of Rs.1000/- each . The names of two best students are entered from each class. A committee headed by the Principal makes the final recommendation. Greetings and Best wishes for Diwali.

Robotics Lab

Robotics is the engineering science and technology of robots and their design, manufacture, application and structural disposition. Robotics is related to electronics, mechanics and software. A Robot is a machine designed to execute one or more tasks repeatedly with speed and precision The term comes from a Czech word, robot, meaning "forced labor." The word robot first appeared in a 1920 play by Czech writer Karle Capek, R.U.R.: Rossum's Universal Robots. In the play, the robots eventually overthrow their human creators.

Our Robotics lab is equipped with scribblers and Big Robots. Scribblers are small robot programmes using simple menu commands. They can produce sound and do movements.

We have different types of Mechanical and Scientific kits. Using these kits, the students can learn how to create moving and responding objects. Students from the class Pre-Primary to Middle visit the Robotics Lab regularly which is inbuilt in their Time-Table.

Maths Lab

Mathematics helps children make sense of the words around them and find logical meaning in the physical world. Through mathematics, children learn to understand their world in terms of numbers, shapes and patterns. They learn to reason, connect ideas, and think logically with mathematical concepts. Mathematics is more than rules and operations that we were taught in school. It is about connecting to and understanding the relationship in every aspect of life.

The present education system has made a 360° shift from learning mathematics by obedience to learning by applied reasoning. This means children learn best when they are interested and even excited about what they are doing. Children are given many opportunities to see and hear different things, and to move about and play with things they can touch. This helps them to connect things, and demonstrate concepts in their own way. Children should be encouraged to think and to show respect for their thinking . But remember, it is not just the doing but the thinking that promotes learning. In view of this we have built a Maths Lab in the school at a cost of Rs.13 lakhs.

Taking into consideration the national aspirations and expectation reflected in the guidelines of the National Curriculum Framework (NCF) developed by NCERT, the Central Board of Secondary Education had initiated a number of steps to make teaching and learning of mathematics at schools activity-based and experimentation oriented. The guidelines are:-

Foster mathematical awareness, skill building, positive attitude and learning by doing
    Learning concepts using concrete objects
Verify math facts and properties using models, measurement and activities
Individualized and peer learning centers: Discovery, Enrichment, Remedial and Reinforcement
Teachers to explain and demonstrate many concepts using charts, models, aids and activities

Math Lab  will enable school students to learn and explore mathematical concepts and verify mathematical facts and theorems using technology tools.

Math Lab  will offer Multiple Teaching and Learning Aids comprising of Technology Applications, Videos, Manipulative, Measuring Instruments, Tables and Charts, to schools based on the three pillars of ‘Imagination, Investigation and Interaction’.

Math Lab provides an opportunity to students to understand, internalize, discover and verify the basic mathematical and geometrical concepts through concrete objects and situations, thus building interest and confidence in students learning the subject. The laboratory also allows and encourages the students to think, discuss amongst themselves as well as with the teacher, and assimilate concepts.

Maths Lab encompasses the following
Maths Lab Junior - For classes 3 to 5
There are 82 activities given based on the NCERT guidelines.
Maths Lab for Middle and Senior School: For 6 to 10
There are 405 activities the implementation of NCF guidelines effectively.

These activities are designed appropriately keeping in mind the age of the learners thereby catering to the different pedagogical needs. e.g., the Graphical User Interface used in the junior classes is different from that of the Senior and Middle School.

English Language Lab

English Language lab is there in GPS to maintain a good linguistic competence through accuracy in grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary and for more effective learning. It is a network based teaching. Our school has this Lab fortunately based on the concept of LSRW through English Edge Liquid Software.

Each student has his/her headphone, he/she has the main advantage of practicing on his/her own so that he/she can improve upon the pronunciation, reading and speaking. It allows teachers also to use audible communication to all the students via headphones and speakers. Basically the objective is to improve the English speaking skill of the students.

Language Lab period is also inbuilt in the Time-Table. Students visit English Language Lab twice in a week.

M-Star

The school is proud to announce the successful implementation of M-Star, a versatile, cutting-edge total Educational e-governance system developed by MGRM. M-Star, an acronym for Monitoring, Scheduling, Tracking, Analyzing and Reporting, Combines smart card and other disparate technologies like the SMS Engine and portal, and serves the needs of instruction, reporting and administration across the school – on a single platform. M- Star SMS Engine

The school is utilizing the M-Star SMS Engine on regular basis to send SMS updates and alerts to parents. Implementing this platform yet again enforces and endorses the school’s endeavor to keep the parents involved and engaged on real time basis with their child’s activities in school.

Life Skills
The teaching of values and life skills in India is sporadic and largely fact based as there is no single comprehensive values and life skills curriculum, either at national or state level. Thus, what children learn about moral values, health, physical and mental fitness, hygiene and life skills is episodic and subjected to the theoretical knowledge obtained through the teachers and parents. Further more, there are no such programs that take developmental and comprehe- nsive approach to values and life skills teaching as fun, at the primary grades.

Thus. for the most important learning years, Indian children are not equipped, either by their parents or by their schools, to deal with the contemporary health hazards and moral turmoil as well as to develop the ability to handle simple situations, that are typical of developing such as ours.

The Indian education system needs informed citizenry with the capacity to access, use and manage information in its own interest. Needless to say, more interactive teaching methods, with its emphasis on students participation in the learning process, will serve as a better model for preparing students for their better future.

The curriculum addresses the issues related to health, hygiene culture, etc. keeping in account the following concerns:

1.    The need to move away from information-based and teacher-center education to process-center and learner-friendly education with a focus on how to think rather than on rote learning.

2.    The need to introduce to children major concerns such as nutrition, yoga and fitness, disease prevention, growth and development, social and emotional health, consumer health, environmental health, safety, conflict resolution/violence prevention, character building and awareness about our environment in a developmental manner.

3.    The need to instill life skills through practical activities that enhance students to learn how to be a critical thinker and problem solver, a responsible and productive citizen, a self directed self-esteem building, decision-making, effective communication , goal setting and stress management.

4.    The need to nurture the inherent abilities of self expression and creativity in children and inculcation in them the aesthetic sensitivity toward the arts.

5.    The need to motivate children towards a disciplined living. The tips for regular exercises introduced and related to the chapters motivate children towards a healthy and disciplined way of living.

6.    The need to develop respect in children for manual work, dignity of labour , hard work, tolerance, co-operation, caring and sharing attitude, patriotism, feeling of oneness, etc. as well as the need to understand their cultural and historical heritage , the need to care for existing public facilities and their surroundings.

7.    The need to help children to become an aware consumer and guide their purchasing largely to be need-based rather than being desire-based.

8.    The need to insert an in-built evaluation system, developed in accordance with the needs and abilities of students into the teaching-learning. This alone can enable the class teacher to monitor the progress of the child with the reference to his or her need and abilities.
